Mentoring and Involvement Activities
Mentoring
Mentoring is offered by SHAP staff as an additional support to help young people to stay on a course and/or to move on. Regular one-to-one meetings are held at SHAP or another convenient place. Each meeting will be for about an hour and it is likely that about five meetings will take place, although they can carry on longer if needed.
Involvement Work
Involvement Work activities provide opportunities for young people to be involved in the
development of SHAP and Inroads services. The Vocal Group was formed in January 2008 and meets every 2 weeks for young people to discuss and contribute to various aspects of Inroads services and the wider activities of SHAP. The group also allows young people to voice their opinions, provides a confidence boost and a social setting for them to gain mutual support. Activities that the Vocal Group have been involved in include:-
- Client-centred events.
- SHAP AGM.
- Involving young people in the promotion of health & safety.
- Advising Inroads on the suitability of new publicity material
- Interviewing new staff.
- Decorating 2 client rooms to make them more user friendly.
Peer support groups have also been set up which provide a forum for information sharing, development and an opportunity to learn from each others experiences. This is done by group talk sessions, fun games and visits. Currnrtly, there is a refugee group and a young women's group.
The involvement Worker is also involved in partnership work with West Yorkshire Fire Service to identify vulnerable young people who would benefit from a health and safety check.

IAG/PA Support
The Inroads Personal Advisers/IAG Workers deliver an integrated service to all young people aged 16-30 that have been identified as benefiting from this support.
The Personal Adviser (PA) service is largely funded by Connexions and is aimed at young people aged 16 to 19, to help them with whatever support they need. This may include help finding college courses or jobs, or help accessing benefits or housing. Clients could be dealing with a number of issues simultaneously and the PA uses the APIR process to determine what their needs are and how to tackle them and in what order.
Where the expertise for dealing with a specific issue lies within another organisation, the PA will refer or signpost as appropriate. However, this is done with ongoing support so that the PA acts as a link person, and may accompany the young person to interviews etc. The communication between the PA and other organisations involved also prevents any overlap or duplication of roles.
As the service is tailored to the needs of the individual, the length of support will vary. Support is also provided for those in or entering mainstream education or training or employment to reduce the risk of drop-out and so assist the young person in sustaining their position.
For young people aged 20 and over, the same service is offered, under the ‘Adult Service’ banner.

Jobsearch
This service is offered to young people who feel they are work ready. Inroads staff will assist them over 2 sessions to look for vacancies, writing CV’s, completing application forms, and preparing for interviews. A Job Search guide is also available for use during support and that young people can take away with them when structured support sessions have ended.
