Courses

Inroads courses are designed around the Independent Living Skills Curriculum to be short, learner-centred, and specifically designed to meet learners’ needs. The Inroads Team have been working with colleagues in SHAP to develop courses, based on the organisation’s collective experience of working with young people. We believe that offering a range of experiences in this way will help to achieve our aims of increasing the self-confidence and self-esteem of clients.
Please see Independent Living Skills Curriculum Model and course flyers for more information.
Inroads at SHAP has Centre Approval from the Open College Network (OCN) and offer accreditation on many of our courses. Learners are encouraged to progress to further learning or employment, but if they are not ready to do so, they can continue to take part in other Inroads courses.
Inroads courses provide a more informal way of learning and allows those who may not have had good experiences of education or chaotic lives resulting in few or no qualifications, an opportunity to have an enjoyable and positive experience of learning and gain accreditation in a more flexible way.
Support is provided for all young people on courses to:
- Contact them before the course starts to invite them to a pre-course meeting (induction session) and to provide details of transport, the venue, course content etc.
- Act as a contact person for any worries about attending such as unfamiliar environment, not knowing anyone else
- Provide a ‘meeter and greeter’ role to ensure a more informal environment
- Deal with any issues which may arise during their time on the course including other things going on in their lives which may affect their participation.
